Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

Rodent Neighbors

I just am so lucky to live in an area just teeming with wildlife!  I see a lot of very cute rodents such as Grey Squirrels, Cotton-tail Rabbits, and Chipmunks several times a week if not daily.  We have about ten Cotton-tail Rabbits here on the street.  We have numerous Chipmunks and Grey Squirrels too!  Almost every house here has several Grey Squirrels in their trees.

The Grey Squirrels eat seeds, acorns, nuts, bark, and small fruits.  The Rabbits mostly eat grass, tender leaves, flowers, and occasionally, small fruits and vegetables.  The Chipmunks eat seeds, nuts, small fruits and occasionally, insects.  The Squirrels live in the trees, the Rabbits and the Chipmunks live in underground burrows.  Occasionally, Rabbits in the wild will live above ground under thick shrubbery and bushes.  Here are some pictures I have recently taken in my yard and along the street where I live.  Please click on the thumbnail version to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. Aw!!! The chipmumks are adorable! When I saw your rodent title on my blog roll, I thought “Oh, no! She has rats or mice!!” I’m glad to find something cuter. Growing up, our backyard was by a woods, and if we say very patiently on the back porch, the chipmunks would come and take the peanuts out of our hands!

  2. You really do live in a critter friendly neighborhood! It’s so nice to know that there are places like that around! I love the small animals too!

  3. We have plenty of Squirrels and Chipmunks (although they aren’t around as much right now as they have been) –but I’ve only seen a couple of Rabbits in our area… They may be here —and we just don’t see them….???? Great pictures of your critters.
