Are they Pine Warblers?

The Pine Warblers look an awfully lot like Goldfinches and I am not totally sure if these birds are Warblers or if they are merely Goldfinches in winter plumage.   I took these pictures in my backyard in the late morning on 10/12/10.  There may also include a female bird among the three birds I saw.  From the photographs, it is pretty hard to get a good look at the bill of these birds.  From what I do see, the shape and size of the bill seems to indicate that the birds are not Finches.  Again, I am not an expert on birds and may be mistaken.  The birds were along with Tufted Titmice, Carolina Chickadees and White-Breasted Nuthatches in the Oaks, Hickories, and in the red fall Dogwoods.  The pictures were taken of the Warblers or Goldfinches in the Dogwood leaves eating the berries of that tree.  If you have any ideas, feel free to weigh-in by commenting.  Please click on the thumbnail version to see the larger photo.  Enjoy!

  1. They are pretty, but I agree, they do not look like Goldfinches. I love your fall leaves too!

  2. Oh, goodness, I never see any warblers, and it is too hard to tell one from the other! Finches seem to like hanging around houses, and warblers are very shy.

    • Hi Ginny, If in fact these are Warblers here, I have only seen Warblers of any type twice before. The first were Yellow Rumped Warblers and the others were Black and White Warblers. I am thinking that these birds I am showing today are really a Warbler because they do seem to have the slender beak instead of the usual more wedge looking bill that the Goldfinches seem to have. It is still a mystery. Have a wonderful day!

  3. Such pretty birds – they do look an awful lot like goldfinches.

  4. Update on 3/16/11: I have been advised that these birds are Black throated Green Warblers! Mystery solved. Thanks!
