Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker Woodpecker

On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2010, I was looking out my basement sliding glass window and saw to my absolute delight, a Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker  on my backyard bird feeder!  I had my camera handy so I snapped a few pictures.  Right after the Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker left the feeder, a Red-Bellied Woodpecker came to the feeder briefly.  I managed to quickly snap off a picture or two but the bird was in a big hurry.  The moment the Red-Bellied Woodpecker left, a gigantic Pileated Woodpecker flew up on to the bird feeder!  Imagine, three large Woodpeckers in the span of just three or four minutes, all up feeding on the bird feeder!  I have a block of Suet with Peanuts plus my normal mix of Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, Cracked Peanuts, snips of dried Apricot, Striped Sunflower Seeds, Niger Seed and Millet.  I took all of these pictures looking through the window with my Nikon camera with the Nikkor 18mm-200mm lens on 12/24/10 in the morning.  The Woodpeckers were wishing me (and you) a very Merry Christmas!  So, I will do so too:  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  Please click on the thumbnail version to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!  P.S. –  It’s a “White Christmas” for us here on the beautiful Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee!

  1. That’s a great assortment of woodpeckers in such a short period of time! Perhaps they know how much you enjoy seeing them and feel comfortable in your yard. Merry Christmas!

  2. The pileated with his wings spread is just fabulous!! I see these birds were your Christmas ornaments from God! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas, filled with joy, birds, and lots of good snapping!
