Pair of Bufflehead Ducks and Female Lesser Scaup Duck (top)

The Lesser Scaup Ducks, Bufflehead Ducks, and Mallard Ducks were all happily paddling in mass along the shoreline near my dock.  Our 101 acre private community lake where I live had been frozen for the past week and just thawed out during the evening of 12/30/10.  I took these pictures yesterday from my living room window, my back deck and from a window in my basement.  I have never seen so many ducks in the same place at the same time here.  There must have been about two hundred ducks in all.  We also had the American Coots and the Canada Geese here.  This is the first of two posts with these pictures of the Ducks.  I’ll post the other here soon.

I will keep this post short and very sweet.  Happy New Year to all!  Please click on the thumbnail version to see the larger picture!

  1. I wonder if some of the ducks and geese from this area ever make it down there. Probably not though: this may be on a different flyway. Our lakes have no open water now and won’t for a long time. There is open water on the river where the current is strong, but a lot of ice on the more still water at the edges; still enough for them to feed though. Have a great day! PS: it’s -5 here this morning.

    • Hi Montucky, I don’t know what flyway we are on here but I suspect that it is the Mississippi. I think I’ll check it out. It is a fairly cool but not cold, rainy day. Thunder last night and a pouring rain early this morning. It has calmed down now. Lots of Coots in my backyard at the moment. Have a wonderful day!

  2. After all of our rain, the birds are definitely flocking to the feeders today… I see that your water birds have flocked to the lake also…. Beautiful!!!!

    Happy 2011 to YOU.

    • Hi Betsy, Thanks! I am just happy watching the parade of wildlife we have. There are many American Coots in my backyard grazing on birdseed. Fun to see the Coots plus the Chipmunk and the Squirrels – also had a Western Grebe lounging on the dock. Never a dull moment. Doves, Goldfinches, Chipmunks and Squirrels in the front yard too! Whew! Who would have believed it? Have a fantastic New Year and a great day!

  3. Gosh, it”s a mob scene!! I guess those ducks know how to party on New Years!! Hoping you have a wonderful New Year with health, joy, and lots of birds to post!!
