Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

Squirrel Watching

Grey Squirrels are all around in the yards here and also are scampering about  in many other yards in my neighborhood.  The Grey Squirrels are happily finding left-over nuts, Acorns, and seeds plus the squirrel food I occasionally put out.  The favorite food other than acorns for the squirrels is, hands down, Sunflower Seeds!  Of course, bird seed fresh from the feeder is a tasty snack.  I like many others, have a hard time keeping the squirrels out of the feeders.  When squirrels get upset they tend to make a chicken-like cluck chatter.  However, being fairly quiet animals, squirrels seldom make a racket with that distress chatter.  Squirrels also communicate with movements of their long bushy tail.  It is now starting to be that time of year when the squirrels are chasing each other more.  Some is due to courtship, or food territoriality, and some is just play between youngsters.  I am happy to have the diverse wildlife I do have here.  I took these pictures in my yards within the last two weeks.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger photo. Enjoy!

  1. Hey Girlie, You know that you are a great friend when I check out any blog about squirrels… ha ha (Just kidding)….

They are fun to watch … Just wish they’d quit digging in our flowerbeds and quit eating my rhoddie buds…. Grrrrrrrr…

    • Hi Betsy, How true is that ! : )
I do hope that your squirrels will find other recreation and food sources and stop playing in your flowers and bushes! Have a fabulous day today and stay dry!

  2. Early one Sunday morning, a chittering and scrabbling noise woke us up. We tracked it to the downspout outside. A suuirrel had fallen in and was stuck. The squirrels liked to sit on the eaves and eat the maple pods, and one had fallen off the edge down into the drain. Phil took the spout apart. Then he held the section with the squirrel in it upside down aand shook hard, squirrel chittering all the time. Out came the squirrel, all floppy and wet, and bolted across the street. Since it was Sunday morning, I thought he should be heading for squirrel church to thank the great Phil for saving his life!

  3. Squirrels are so much fun to watch. 🙂

  4. They are really cute, aren’t they! Those are very nice photos! What would all of the small critters do without sunflower seeds!
