Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

The Eastern Chipmunks here in the yards are well-behaved and super speedy little cuties!  I have never had any problems yet garden-wise.  I can, though, understand how sometimes the Chipmunks do eat or dig where they should not.  The Eastern Chipmunks live in underground tunnels.  That also is disliked by many.  At the moment, my yards are not professionally landscaped and so far, no trouble from these sweet animals.  The Eastern Chipmunks eat seeds, berries, small fruits, nuts, some plants, and insects.  As far as I can tell, there are three Chipmunks living in my backyard and one in the front. They spend a lot of time racing to wherever they are harvesting their daily grub.  They also pack their cheek pouches full and store away extra foods for their family.  The Eastern Chipmunks have several predatory enemies such as the Red-tail Hawk, domestic pet Cats, Red Foxes, Grey Foxes, and the Bald Eagles.  I took these pictures in my yards and from my windows and deck on April 6, 2011 and April 12, 2011.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. Oh they’re cute! I remember them from Wisconsin but I don’t ever see them here in Texas. That last shot of him jumping is precious!

    • Hi Texwisgirl, I enjoy spotting them. I have to be quick as they tend to go to their burrow or find a spot under plants to hide. Have a super nice Friday!

  2. They are as cute as can be! I love the first shot: you got him in mid-air! We always have several here too and they do dig in the flowers and eat things they shouldn’t but they are so cute and so much fun to watch that they are worth the trouble. A couple years ago we put a large fiberglass owl in our little greenhouse to scare them away: a few days later we saw one sitting on top of it.

  3. Amazing how much he blends in and camoflauges! You even got a picture of him running, how cool!

    • Hi Ginny, I try to vary the shots so as to show the natural settings and character of the animals. I am glad to have seen the Eastern Chipmunks in my yards and do like them a lot. Have a wonderful day!

  4. Love your chipmunk photos. 🙂 They are such cute little animals.
