Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

We have had several Canada Geese and the Wood Ducks have newly hatched goslings and ducklings.  I was pretty surprised to see that day old Canada Gosling in my backyard yesterday with its parents.  I guess they were hungry and went to places where they had been lucky in finding food recently.  Canada Geese eat grass, seeds, certain tender plants and of course, lake weeds.  The Wood Ducks were also up in the next door neighbor’s yard and then quickly went to the water where I took their picture.  Their duckling was between its parents whenever it was on the move.  I did not show the father Wood Duck but he was always bringing up the rear.  I also was surprised to see a single duckling with this pair of Wood Ducks.  Two other families of Canada Geese have several slightly older goslings following the mother goose.  All this new life here on the lake is exciting to see!  I took these pictures on May 20, 2011 from my windows and deck.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. such sweet tiny babies! that little wood duck all by itself is rather rare, isn’t it? more often than not we see ducks with 12 or more!

    • Hi Texwisgirl, I think these are first year parents. I also saw only a single Wood duckling last season so maybe the population is just small here. I also know that I did see a Great Blue Heron on my shoreline a few days ago so that may explain the low number. Have a great day!

  2. Oh those babies are adorable, Linda… I am so glad you got some pictures to share.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  3. Sure are cute! I’m surprised to see how prominent the markings are on the little Wood Duck.

  4. The ducklings and the gooslings are so cute. I have always loved the wood ducks.
