Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

The Ring-Necked Ducks have been here for a couple of months.  They are migratory diving ducks.  The hens are resident here on the little farm pond with the drakes hanging out on the nearby private community lake.  Ring-necked hens are a gorgeous sable and light brown color.  They have a white ring around their blue bills.  The drakes are black and white and also have a ring around their blue bills.  These ducks eat aquatic snails, insects and aquatic plants.  By the way, I have noticed that these small ducks are very fast paddlers.  They really speed past the much larger Mallards on the pond.    I took these pictures in the last two weeks here in the yard and from the street in front of my driveway.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. They are pretty! I almost think the hens are prettier than the drakes: I like their color scheme.

    • Hi Montucky, Yes, the hens are very beautiful ducks. I enjoy seeing different kinds of ducks here. Though I do like Mallards, other types of ducks are interesting to watch. Have a great day today and thanks for your always insightful comments here!

  2. Hi Linda, Great pictures of the Ring-Necked Ducks… You have such a good variety of water birds around you…. That is NEAT…

Are you ready for our big freeze? Wish we’d get snow that will protect the new spring growth… BUT-that may not happen.

  3. so pretty! haven’t seen them here for a couple of winters, now. really enjoyed them when they stopped by.

    • Hi TexWisGirl, Glad you sometimes get to see these ducks in your locality. Today is a much colder day here. It is likely going to snow tonight. I saw Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads, Ring-necked Ducks, Mallards, and Canada Geese here on the pond this afternoon. Also saw a Red-bellied Woodpecker here. Photographs in up-coming posts. Have a splendid day today and enjoy your ranch pond!
