Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

Yesterday was a breezy sunny and cool day here at the little farm.  I was out with the camera twice.  I took the picture of the Canada Goose walking into the pond in the late morning.  The Canada Geese spend their breakfast time here at the pond and then fly over to the nearby lake.  I snapped the rest of these pictures at about 2:30 PM.  The Great Blue Heron is a different bird from the one that usually wades along the shoreline here at the little farm pond.  The heron was up on the pasture with the cattle that the next door farmer has.   I was overjoyed to see a Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker woodpecker hunting for insects in the grass near the dam area of the pond.  The yellow coloring of the shafts of his feathers are easily seen when he flies.

The Mallard Ducks are almost always here.  The drake Mallard is very handsome with his emerald-green head  The bottom middle photograph is of the pair of Hooded Mergansers that showed up here yesterday.  Perhaps these Mergansers have been this way before and are on their return north.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. The woodpecker with all those spots looks beautiful! An eventful afternoon you had yesterday.. 😀

    • Hi Avi, Yes, the Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker woodpeckers are really exotic looking. I had a tremendously nice time taking pictures yesterday. Can’t spend that much time in my hobby every day but it is fun. Glad you enjoy seeing the woodpecker and the waterfowl pictures. Have a super good day and thanks for your kind comments!

love the yellow flash from the flicker! 🙂

    • Hi TexWisGirl, He was a handsome bird, for sure! Glad you liked the pictures. He is great to see but is an elusive bird. He teases me with his siren-like call from way inside the gulch area so when he does come out, I snap pictures! Have a great afternoon and evening!

  3. The heron s such an impressive bird! But even so, today my favorites are that flicker you got, and the flight picture is breathtaking!

  4. You sure get diversity on any given day! No wonder that you enjoy the birds so much!

  5. Hi Linda, I am ‘following’ you on WordPress now –since I have heard that Blogger Reader will no longer (after March 1) support WordPress –or anything other than Blogger… Bummer… BUT–I get an email when you post a post –so can get to your post that way… I don’t want to miss anything!!!!

We are in Arkansas –and I searched for some Eagles at a lake today… No Luck!!!

    Great pictures.

    • Hi Betsy, Glad you can still read the blog. I hope you will have fun and see those amazing Arkansas sights. I also hope you get to spot an eagle! Have a super great day tomorrow!

  6. Gorgeous birds and photos. The flicker is my favorite, great shots.
