Kildeer

A few Kildeer have been around here lately.  They especially browse for insects in the grass near the gulch area and also across the pond in the large cattle pasture that belongs to the next-door neighbor’s farm.  Kildeer are shorebirds.  They have long legs and a medium-sized pointed slender bill.  They are brown on the back and white underneath.  They have bands of very dark brown, that is nearly black.

Kildeer nest on the ground  in undisturbed quiet areas when possible.  The bird tricks predators by playing as injured to draw the predator away from the nest area.  I got pretty close to one bird who seemed to just freeze in place when I walked near and stopped.  I was about fifteen feet away from the bird and was in plain sight.  I took most of the pictures yesterday, April 27, 2012 and also on April 19, 2012 in my yard.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. That’s another bird I have not seen. They are gorgeous… We may have them here —but unless they come to my feeders, I don’t usually see them… Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful weekend.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

    • Hi Betsy, No, I doubt there are any actually in your immediate neighborhood but there are some on Peavine South of the grocery and immediately next to the little offices and new shop on the driveway side by the ATM Kiosk that is free standing. Have to look closely near the cow pasture to see them but there they are. Have a great day and a fine weekend!

i think these birds are so handsome. and their chicks are adorable striped cotton balls on toothpicks!

    • Hi TexWisGirl, They are quite lovely. I think I have a pair nesting near my driveway in an area where my husband had not yet mowed. He will put off mowing until the birds are through nesting. The birds put on a big show anytime even Robins stroll into the area – same when I walk down the driveway to the street for the mail. Ha! Smart birds. Have a wonderful Sunday tomorrow and thanks for your always interesting and nice comments!

  3. These are such cool birds, and you got GREAT pictures! I have only seen one once, many years ago.

    • Hi Montucky, Thanks! I was quite close to the bird and got really lucky in that I got a few close-up shots. My long lens is in need of repair as its focus isn’t focusing as sharply as it used to. The company that made the lens is excellent and will do the fix quickly. Have a wonderful Sunday!

  4. I love that top shot! What a pretty bird! I remember them being here back when I was a child, but haven’t seen any lately. Perhaps later in the summer.

  5. That first photo looks like he was posing for you. 😉

  6. I’ve never seen a Kildeer before. Thanks!

    • Hi Moon, You are most welcome. They are interesting birds. Because a pair are nesting, every time I walk down my long gravel driveway, they start their warning song – to distract me away from the nest area. The result is that I can not sneak up on other nearby birds and wildlife to take pictures because everyone has been warned that I am present. Ha! Have a wonderful day tomorrow!
