Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

There were four different species of duck as well as the Canada Geese here on the pond on April 28, 2012 when I took these pictures from my yard.  The ducks here were:  Wood Ducks, Ring-Necked Duck, Mallard Ducks, and a pair of Blue-Winged Teal Ducks.  They were all bunched up in the spillway area of the dam because the cows were wading in the pond a little ways up on that same shoreline.  Funny to see the papa Canada Goose basically surrounded by all those ducks.  Good thing everyone gets along well. I was quite happy to see the ducks.  It won’t be long now before the geese have their new arrivals.  The goose eggs should hatch out any day now.  Will be nice to see the Canada Goslings when they hatch.  I’ll keep you posted.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. Hi Linda, Great set of photos today… I was VERY upset yesterday since Daddy Bluebird was VERY upset… We finally looked in the nestbox and Mama Blue and all of the babies were GONE… Not sure what got them but there was no sign of distress in the nestbox. Several people say that it was probably a snake –but we have a baffle on the pole under that box. We NEVER see snakes around here….?????? Any ideas?

    • Hi Betsy, So very sorry to hear of it. Yes, a snake could and would. Other possibles are a Bobcat (yes those are around in the Glade) or a Raccoon. Less likely but still possible, is a house cat. My sympathies. It is not easy loving wildlife. Have a better day and I hope Mr. Bluebird finds a new Mrs. soon.

all those wood ducks are so cool to see! as are the blue-winged teals!

    • Hi TexWisGirl, I am so happy that the Blue-Winged Teal are still here. I was surprised to learn from our next door neighbor that amazingly, Sand Hill Cranes had landed and stayed at this little farm for awhile two years ago. Wow! Hope they come here next year or in the future. Have a super nice day!

  3. Those Wood Ducks look like babies beside the Canada Goose!! Can’t wait till you start posting REAL babies!

  4. It’s so good to see all of those birds together. They must view the pond as a special sanctuary!

  5. What a fortunate traffic jam. 😉
