Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

This Brown Thrasher was up on a dead tree located in the woodlands in what I refer to as the gulch area a few days ago.  I was taking pictures of the Baltimore Oriole that was nearby and saw this Brown Thrasher.  This was the first Brown Thrasher I have seen here at the little farm.  These are medium-sized birds that are approximately the same size as a Mockingbird.  Their color is a rusty brown on the back and head and a buff with brown streaks on the underside of the wings and on their chest.    The Brown Thrasher has a stout pointed bill.  They hunt for insects on the ground in ditches and in woodland areas.  I have only seen a few of these birds ever.  They are shy birds.  I was glad to get the pictures.  I took these pictures on May 5, 2012 late in the afternoon from my driveway at the street here.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. Good Morning, Linda… It’s foggy here in the Glade this morning… My birds are just now finding me –since I put away all of the bird food when we were gone. BUT–I have a couple of loud Starlings around now. Hope they move on soon!!!!

We have Brown Thrashers also… You got a great picture of yours.

    Have a good day.

    • Hi Betsy, We also had light fog here earlier. Nothing much. The Brown Thrashers are neat. As I recall, you were the one who helped me identify the Brown Thrasher a few years back on this blog. Thanks then and now! Be glad you only have a few European Starlings. I sometimes have fifty here in the pasture! But then, they don’t hurt anything here so I guess it’s a good place for them. Have a wonderful day!

  3. I’ve never heard of this bird before, thanks for sharing the photos. It’s beautiful.

  4. Great pictures of the secretive bird!!! i have only gotten a glimpse of one once, many years ago. They are extremely shy.

  5. What a nice find that was! I’d love to see one but never have!

  6. Hi Linda, the Brown thrasher is a cool bird. Their eyes are a pretty color. Great sighting and photos.

  7. Going through my backlog of emails, I saw I had saved this. This is sure a favorite bird and they have a beautiful song. We have a pair attempting to nest and now that one is taking time to bathe, I suspect the grackles are finally leaving them alone. The gracks chased them out of at least one tree.

    • Hi Birding Bunch, Yes, those Grackles can heckle other birds a lot. The Brown Thrashers are lovely birds! So nice you have a nesting couple. Have a wonderful weekend!
