Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

It seems like I surprise the Wood Ducks here on the pond a lot.  They are so skittish that whenever I approach the pond and they are on the same shoreline as I am, they flee.  The hen Wood Duck duckling was out with its mother and was startled by my presence.  The pair took off in a low “Touch and go” flight to the middle of the pond.  That actually is good practice for the duckling.  Soon it will be a very confident flier.  I took these pictures on July 4, 2012 in my yard.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. They are so cute…. You really captured some great shots of the little guy… They do grow up so fast…

Did you get any damage from that storm? We had 2-3 trees come down in our backyard (golf course property)…. Scared us to death… Worst storm we’ve had here since moving here in 2003. Luckily, we didn’t have any damage though…..

I kept thinking about those little birds that had nests in those big trees… Sad…

    • Hi Betsy, Huge wind storm with only vague drips of rain in it. Blew stuff around on the porch and lots of old Oak leaves came off the tree from last year’s crop. No damages here at all, I am happy to report. Glad the weather is calmer. Everything was OK at the lake house this morning so all is good there, too. Hoping you have a nice evening tonight!

so cute! love the little splash/splash scene. 🙂

    • Hi TexWisGirl, Yes, vey cute, indeed! I am glad I saw this flying lesson. Good thing too, that the duckling is learning to fly as the heron has been here daily and likely has its rookery very close to the pond now. Have a wonderful day tomorrow!

  3. These photos are great! In the hunting world you would be known as a remarkably good “wing shot”!

    • Hi Montucky, Thanks! I really like seeing all the ducks and geese and other water birds here. I enjoy taking pictures and am trying hard to improve my photography. I appreciate your nice words! Have a wonderful day today!

  4. Love the in flight photo … must be very entertaining to watch them practice.

  5. I think it is wonderful ful you are able to see the wood ducklings grow up. They are so cute.
