Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

This little woodpecker is a male Downy Woodpecker.  It is one of the smaller woodpeckers that we have here in TN.  This little guy has never been at my bird seed feeder before.  I have only seen three Downy Woodpeckers in the past year so this is an especially welcome sight.

The male Downy Woodpecker has a little red patch on the back of the bird’s head, and females do not have that spot.  These birds eat insects and enjoy seeds, nuts, and fruits.  They live inside cavities in the trunks of larger trees like Oaks or Hickories.  This bird was only at the feeder just a moment and then it was gone.  I took these pictures yesterday, Oct. 5, 2012 from my living room window.  Sorry for the poor quality of the shots as the light was dim and I was taking the pictures through winidow screen as well as porch railing.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!
