The Great Blue Heron

DSC_7715 - 2012-12-22 at 15-29-51

“Hank” the Great Blue Heron has been here about every four or five days now.  He wades among the reeds or stands up on the shoreline scouting for small rodents, lizards, turtles, or large insects to eat.  Of course, he favors fish but with the Ring-necked Ducks and Hooded Merganser Ducks here in recent days, he now has had competition for the small fish in the pond.  He also flies the short distance over to the small lake for his fishing needs.  He is a wonderful bird to watch!  I took these pictures on Dec. 22, 2012,  Jan. 10, 2013, Jan. 13, 2013 and this morning,  in my yard.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. He is a beauty, Linda… Glad he is BACK and that you can get so many great photos.

    Stay WARM and stay DRY.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

    • Hi Betsy, Yes, it is going to be colder soon and we may get some rather sloppy snow tonight or tomorrow. Have a good day tomorrow and stay warm and safe if ice comes.

  2. You are lucky, it is rare when we see one. Have you seen him fish?

    • Hi Ginny, On rare occasion I will see him spear a small fish. Usually he is just standing or wading when I am out with the camera. I took today’s pictures from my living room window. Have a great day tomorrow!

  4. Seems like Hank has a pretty good life there and give you a lot of enjoyment too. He’s more famous than he knows.

  5. It is nice that Hank is still hanging around. Great shot, love the Great Blues!
