Watching Crows

Wildlifewatcher's Blog (16)

Common Crows are about the only birds that I see each day here on my street now.  I hear their cawing before I actually see the small group of three or four individuals.  They come and go and move from tree to house and so on all down the block.  They eat insects, fruits, eggs, and various carrion.  We have a lot of water around with the rainfall retention ponds now having many inches of fresh water in them.  Additionally, several neighbors do have bird baths.

Like the vultures, Crows are nature’s clean-up squad.  I do think though, that these handsome and very intelligent birds like fresh foods best.  I took these pictures from my front yard.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.   Enjoy!

  1. I really like the photo of the crow in the pine!

    • Hi Montucky, I do too! The Crows like the Pines for their shady branches, tasty insects lured by sap, and for the pine cone seeds (pine nuts). This Pine is next to the rainfall retention pond which has a lot of water in it at the moment. By the way, I spotted a Bald Eagle while driving about 40 miles from where I live this AM. Have a super good day tomorrow!

  2. Great photos, Linda. As you know, we have alot of crows around here –but they don’t come close to the feeders (thank goodness)…. I saw a Juvenile Red-headed this week. Will post about him on Wednesday….

    • Hi Betsy, Great about seeing the juvenile Red-head. I have not seen any so far but a few adults are around up in that ranch pasture area near the gate here. Good that you don’t have Crows bothering your feeders. Have a really nice day tomorrow!

  3. i like the smart, family-oriented birds, too.

  4. We have many around here, too, and they are SO smart!!! i had never thought f them like a clean up squad but I think you are right!

    • Hi Ginny, Yes, they are intelligent. They do prefer to eat wholesome foods, but they will eat almost anything they find if hungry enough. Have a fantastic Tuesday tomorrow and thanks for your comments!

  5. The Crows seem to be everywhere. And they are real piggies too! Have a happy week ahead!
