Central American Adventure

DSC_6989 - Version 2

Costa Rica and Panama are lovely countries.  I had the pleasure of being there for a very brief time last week while on a cruise.  I was thrilled to see several Caiman, which are a reptile similar to a Crocodile or Alligator.  I also saw huge Crocodiles (Caiman are shown above and the Crocodiles are seen below).

These reptiles were spotted in Lake Gatun in the Panama Canal, and on the Chagres River, that is a fresh-water source for Lake Gatun.   The large lizards eat fish, birds, turtles, frogs and smaller land animals.  The Crocodiles cannot chew and do all digestion of their food internally.  I took these pictures on Oct. 30, 2013.  I’ll have more to share regarding different animals from the region, in the next several posts.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. neat! i am not familiar with ‘caimans’ as i would have certainly called them crocs. i hope your cruise was awesome!

    • Hi Theresa, I loved Cartagena, Colombia for the historic walled city. Loved Costa Rica’s Port Limon rainforest areas (Atlantic coastline area). Enjoyed seeing the Atlantic half of the Panama Canal and the locks on that side. Did not make a full transit of the canal. Had an excellent trip. Have a great Tuesday tomorrow!

  2. Sounds like you had an awesome cruise, Linda. Can’t wait to see more photos from the cruise itself…. Interesting ‘crocs’ (caimans)… Who would have known????

    • Hi Betsy, It was all a very last minute cruise vacation deal. Being in FL is helpful in that vein. I saw a lot of animals but strangely, few birds. Wrong time of day most days for birdwatching. Had to go with the flow of ship port visits and tours. Will be posting more. Have a wonderful day tomorrow!

  3. They are so prehistoric looking, like they are leftover from another age.

    • Hi Ginny, We saw 2 fighting on the shore for territory – super sharp teeth! Yes, they do look prehistoric. Have a wonderful Tues. tomorrow! Thanks for the great comments!

  4. I’m glad that you had a good trip! Pretty cool that you saw some Caiman!

    • Hi Montucky, It was a super-great deal on the fare for this last-moment cruise for us. I am thrilled we made the trip and saw a bunch of very interesting sights. I really enjoyed the partial Panama Canal transit with loads of history and engineering. Saw some of the new cut being built (in the distance). Have a fine day tomorrow!

  5. The caimans are neat, I saw them while visiting Costa Rica! Sounds like an awesome cruise! Welcome back! Have a happy day!
