Hawks on a Wild Wednesday

I saw all of these hawks at the Paynes Prairie State Park near Gainesville, Florida on December 16, 2013.  The hawks were cruising the skies looking for a quick meal.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. That looks like it is an excellent setting in which to see the hawks. They are always interesting.

    • Hi Monrucky, Yes, from the overlook (really an elevated boardwalk type pier about 50 yards long), we had a really long view of the marshy prairie. Lots of different large birds there. I read that there are or were, wild horses, too. We want to visit more places in the park. I will be sharing pictures of Sand Hill Cranes, Egrets, and Great Blue Herons in future posts here. Have a tremendously nice day!

  2. Yes, those hawks are looking hard for a good meal!!!!!! Hawks are beautiful birds –but I don’t want them near my yard and feeders. I have lots of Mourning Doves –which the hawks LOVE.

    Merry Christmas.

    • Hi Betsy, Well, where you are in the Glade, there are a lot of Coots out on the lakes now – they are another favorite of the hawks! Yes, you do not want the doves being snacked-upon! Have a truly fine day today and thanks for your always appreciated comments!

    • Actually, your birds would be safe from these guys. They’re Northern Harriers and are looking for rodents. We are glad any time they come around here and catch a meal; that many less that come in the house. 🙂

You got some very nice shots of this bird, wildlifewatcher. I am still trying. I like their faces, similar to an owl’s.

  3. Wow, so many! And you got some really great shots! Especially of the short curved beaks.

    • Hi Ginny, Yes, there were several hawks during the hour or so I was there at the park. The wading birds would not be seen until a hawk flew over and then I would see the heads of cranes, egrets, and herons pop up from the tall grass. We were a long distance away from almost all of the birds save for a few. Have an especially nice evening and a great day tomorrow!

  4. It is a lovely place to view the hawks. Great sightings and photos. Enjoy your evening and the rest of the week!

    • Hi Eileen, Thanks! Where we were was just off the highway and we had a lot to see. Sometime soon, we plan to visit the main areas of the park and do some short hikes. Have a wonderful Thursday tomorrow!

  5. i like to see them cruising over the fields.
