Black Skimmers

These Black Skimmers are a shorebird that I photographed at the Fort Island Gulf Beach in Crystal River, Florida.  They fly very low over the water and skim along the surface to hunt for small fish.  They are quite handsome!  The Black Skimmers were there at that Gulf of Mexico beach with some Laughing Gulls (bottom right picture is of a Skimmer and a Gull) and a few small shorebirds.  I took these pictures on December 20, 2014.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger photo.  Enjoy!  Wishing all a Merry Christmas!

  1. Interesting birds! I don’t believe I’ve seen them before.
    Merry Christmas!

    • Hi Montucky, Merry Christmas to you, too! Yes, the Black Skimmers are pretty tropical birds. This was the first time I had seem them. They are really vividly colored. Have a fabulous holiday!

  2. They are such cool birds!

  3. Another one of my favorites, the Black Skimmer. Awesome shots, I love the flight captures.. Happy Holidays to you and your family!

    • Hi Eileen, So glad you also enjoy the Black Skimmers. The flocks were very flighty and because there were about 10 or so people at the beach, each time someone started walking, the birds took off – over and over. Made for interesting pictures. Nobody was trying to chase the birds but I guess sometimes, they get skittish. Have a super Christmas!
