Spotting Sand Hill Cranes and seeing other wading birds and birds of prey, were highlights of my day trip to the wonderful Sunnyhill Restoration Area in Weirsdale, Florida on January 3, 2015.  This park is conservation land along the banks of the Oklawaha River and used to be a huge farm years ago.

This was the third time I had visited the park.  I really loved seeing a trio of Sand Hill Cranes in the front yard of the one of the park office spaces.  I had seen two cranes in the same yard the last time I visited, which was about a month ago.  We also spotted a flock of the cranes down the road about two miles but I could not get any pictures as there was no place nearby to park along the highway.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. It has to be pretty cool to see the cranes and be close enough for a picture!

    • Hi Montucky, I had first taken a bunch of pictures of the cranes from inside the car but thought the pictures were not too good so I carefully and quietly got out of the car and took a few more. Yes, I was close to the birds (had to change lens length) but the birds stayed calm. I think they are used to people somehow. This park does not see a lot of visitors but occasional school tours happen and same for individual tourists. Have a tremendous coming week!

  2. Looks like a beautiful area to see the birds.. I always love seeing the cranes, herons and the egrets.. Great birds and wonderful photos. Have a happy Monday!

    • Hi Eileen, Thank you so much! It is a gorgeous pastoral spot and I thoroughly enjoyed the short hike we took along the banks of the river. The levy is grassy and the officials keep the grass short so walking is a pleasure. Have a fantastic coming week!

  3. the cranes are awesome! they look like yard art. 😉 nice shot of the snowy in flight, too!

    • Hi Theresa, Thanks! The back story on the egrets is that a fisherman drove by in his speed boat upsetting a trio of the Snowy Egrets and that lone Great Blue Heron so all four flew a bit and then returned to normal. Have a great day today and thanks for your super comments!

  4. Hi All, Those of you with Blogger account blogs – I do read them and want to leave comments but I am have a lot of difficulty with the verification stuff. Just wanted you to know. Thanks for your kind patience. Linda
