This Southern Bald Eagle was in flight when I first spotted it at Paynes Prairie State Park near Gainesville, FL on January 5, 2015.  It was a cold blustery afternoon with wind chills in the 30’s!  Cold for us!  The eagle perched on a tall electric pole and just sat in the wind surveying its territory.

I was across the road at the boardwalk pier overlook on highway 441 when I saw this gorgeous eagle.   I walked along the side of the road and continued to take pictures as the eagle landed and while it stayed perched.  These eagles are excellent hunters and eat a variety of rodents and other small animals, fish, and birds.  There seems to be a lot of good hunting in this freshwater marsh now.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

  1. They are sure nice to see. The pair who live across the river raised a chick this year. I’m glad that you have them there!

    • Hi Montucky, Really neat that you get to watch the families of Bald Eagles where you live. Our Southern Bald Eagles are a tiny bit smaller than the Northern variety that you probably see in your area. Both are great birds. I have been fortunate to see both types (Alaska, Tennessee, and Florida). Have a fabulous coming week!

  2. The eagles are always a great sight to see. Awesome photos.. Have a happy Monday..

  3. you’re so lucky! i have yet to see my first in the wild. however, they’re becoming more prevalent in our area with a few nesting within 30 miles of here, so if i’d actually drive to see them, i bet i could (instead of hoping they’ll fly over run*a*round!) 🙂

    • Hi Theresa, If you know of a spot that the Bald Eagles frequent, I highly recommend going there to try and spot one or more of the majestic birds. Awesome! Have a great Tuesday tomorrow!

It’s been awhile since I have commented. I hope you are doing well. Very nice photos of the Bald Eagle. We didn’t see any on our last birding venture, but saw a lot of Trumpeter Swans. We went to a prairie meeting Saturday and I picked up quite a bit of reading material and learned “prairie” is the French word for ‘meadow’. 🙂

    • Hi Birding Bunch, Great to have you comment! I so enjoy your own communications. I have seen Trumpeter Swans once in another state. They are quite beautiful. Interesting about the French word of prairie! Thanks for that tie-bit. Have an exceptionally nice day today.
