Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

I spotted an Osprey atop a huge high tension electric tower along Highway 441 near the Paynes Prairie Preserve overlook when I was there on May 3, 2015.  I did not see many birds or animals but did notice a few Red-winged Blackbirds, Boat-tailed Grackles (I believe the center picture below shows a Boat-tailed Grackle in flight) and heard a few Alligators.

It was pretty breezy out so I just enjoyed the blooming purple flowers of the Pickerel Weed that seemed to be carpeting the fresh water marsh.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see a slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!

  1. really beautiful fields of color!

    • Hi Theresa, It made the trip up there really worth it to see the gorgeous scenery. The Osprey was a bonus! I live about 35 miles from there so I do get up there every month or so. Have a great weekend!

  2. Hello, it may be a weed but the purple flowers are still pretty. Love the Osprey! Happy Friday, have a great weekend!

    • Hi Eileen, Yes, that Pickerel is gorgeous! I liked seeing the Osprey. By the way, went by the larger of our rainfall retention ponds (near the health club and square) and saw the pair of Mottled Ducks still there and a couple of small shorebirds. Nothing much other than a Cormorant and a Turtle at the horse ranch pond though. I try to check all of these spots at least once a week. Lots of fun! Have a great weekend! Thanks for your always great comments.

  3. Those fields of flowers are sure pretty to see!

    • Hi Montucky, Thanks! I like sharing the vistas. At certain times of the year, freshwater marshes can be very beautiful! Heard some ‘gators bellowing out among all those Pickerel Weed plants. The water all around is about 1-2’ deep. Just deep enough to keep the ‘gators happy. The presence of so many alligators is likely why there were few wading birds. All is timing. Winter is when the action is.

  4. Hi all, Wishing all Moms a really wonderful Mother’s Day tomorrow!

  5. Hi there, Just stopping by to say “Happy Mother’s Day” to you. I’m sure you are having a fabulous day. I celebrated yesterday when one of my sons and his beautiful wife came to see us….

As you probably know, we’ve been out-of-town this past week and I haven’t done any blogging much at all. I hope you enjoyed my two Tulip blog posts while we were gone——and be sure and tune in tomorrow morning to find out what we’ve been doing this past week….

Enjoyed your post today! Ospreys are so beautiful.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

    • Hi Betsy, Thank you so much! Same to you! I will look forward to reading and seeing your fine upcoming post. Glad you had a great time with your family. Lots of songbirds in our trees outside today! Have a pleasant coming week!
