Ibises Galore!

DSC_6212

American White Ibises were happily lounging around the shore of one of the local small lakes when I stopped to take pictures.  The brown and white bird is a juvenile American White Ibis.  This crowd of Ibises were attracted to the sound of gas-powered golf carts.

Tourists and a few locals (some with youngsters) come in the golf carts and give the throngs of Ibises and other water birds, treats like crackers, bread, cereal and bird seed.  I do not participate in this.  The birds have come to expect that people in carts means that food will come their way.  They actually beg.  No wonder there are a lot of the birds around!  The natural foods for American White Ibises are aquatic and land snails, worms, insects, grubs, and they occasionally eat seeds.  Yes, there are Wood Storks in one of the pictures (first row at left).  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger photo.  Enjoy!

  1. I’ve definitely never seen one of these. Don’t suppose they ever turn up in the UK! Ive a description of some of ‘our’ birds on my blog.

    • Hi Erik, No, I doubt any would be out in the wild in the United Kingdom. The American White Ibises are semi or tropical birds. I have amazingly seen video of American White Ibises in the Los Angeles, California area of the U.S.A. I lived there in LA for 18 years and never saw one! I hope you get to spot Ibises some day somewhere during your travels! Have a wonderful day!

  2. Good morning, these are awesome shots of the White Ibis. I think a lot of people are so used to feeding bread to birds they do not know it is actually bad for them to be fed. I enjoyed youd post and photos. Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!

    • Hi Eileen, Many thanks! I am certain the folks who bring foods for the birds are well-meaning. I just think it is sad to see Ibises come literally running to the golf carts when any visitors in carts arrive. They also shyly walk up to people. Bad as Sea Gulls! Sweet though. Have a super good day!

  3. i’m used to hearing of folks feeding bread to ducks (and also causing trouble w/ rotting bread in the ponds, etc.) but never ibises!

    • Hi Theresa, Ibises, ducks, geese, and horrors, Wood Storks! I have seen it all. The ducks, well, they do OK with treats it seems. I doubt the Ibises get harmed other than the operant conditioning getting the birds accustomed to being fed (carts=food). Have a fine day today!
