Just another WordPress.com weblog about Nature and Wildlife

The fishing must have been quite good as a couple of days ago I spotted a Tri-colored Heron, a Snowy Egret, a pair of Pied-billed Grebes, and later, some Hooded Mergansers all trying to catch their lunch in the shallows of a little park lake near here.  All really love eating small fish, tadpoles, frogs, small turtles, and aquatic snails.

This particular little lake also has a few small resident alligators competing and preying so I think the wading birds are pretty careful – I know I was!  This arm of the lake is behind the Veteran’s Memorial near Spanish Square and next to the famous golf cart bridge over highway 441.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see a larger version of that photo.  Enjoy!

  1. how cool! yes, i’d watch out for the snappers, too! 🙂

    • Hi Tex, I really only see those alligators far away – on purpose! Ha! I do enjoy watching all the bigger birds here. Hard to find many songbirds but they do exist – I promise! Have a wonderful day!

  2. I always enjoy seeing your great selection of Florida Birds!!!!

Happy New Year!!!!!! Hope you and your loved ones have a blessed 2016….

I posted my “Year in Review” blog today. Had fun working on that one.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

    • Hi Betsy, Many thanks! I saw a Glossy Ibis today for the first time ever. I even had the camera so I will post about that bird soon. I’ll be looking forward to your year in review post. Your blog is wonderful! Have a great day tomorrow.

  3. It’s interesting and good to see that the birds mostly get along with each other in close proximity. I’ve seen that here too with the smaller birds as well as waterfowl.

    • Hi Montucky, There are Alligators there so maybe it is strength in numbers. I also think that there was a school of small fish in that spot which attracted the attention of all those birds. Yes, they seem to work OK with each other. It reminded me of the old photographs I’d see in Los Angeles newspapers about the opening of trout season in the Sierra Nevada Mountains nearest Los Angeles. You would see a line of men fishing side by side, elbow to elbow (maybe 20-30 in a spot!). Ha. Have a super good day tomorrow!

  4. Grreat birds and images. Yes, I would be careful with the gators around. Great post and photos. Happy Saturday!
