White Ibises

dsc_1896

White Ibises are a common sight here in Central Florida.  I snapped these pictures yesterday along my street here in The Villages, FL, and also in Tuscawilla Park in Ocala, FL.

White Ibises eat earth worms, grubs, aquatic worms, aquatic snails such as Apple Snails, and several aquatic and land insects.  The Ibis flock likes to roost or rest, in trees.  It is quite the sight to see a whole flock take off at once flying around the park!  Something like out of a movie such as “The Birds” by Hitchcock.

I enjoy having Ibises around.  They are sweet useful big birds and are pretty harmless mellow additions to the neighborhood.  It does take a bit of getting used-to seeing the flock stroll around the yards (like a herd of cows actually!).  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!

  1. By the way, the Ibises strolling around the street, just come and go. We see them in the mornings here maybe twice a week or so for a few minutes. They browse yard to yard all down the block.

  2. It must be pretty cool to see them around every day!

    • Hi Montucky, Yes, I enjoy them. It was shocking the first time I saw a flock in my neighborhood when I first moved to Ocala. Have a great day today and thanks for your fine comments!

  3. Hello, Great photos and info. I did know what the Ibis ate, they are always poking their beaks in the ground. Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!

    • Hi Eileen, I was doing further research and learned that the White Ibis also eats crayfish, small fish, and small turtles. They also can occasionally eat crabs in brackish marshlands. So, I learned a bit more about this wonderful big bird. Goofy looking but useful in insect control and lawn aeration (fertilization too – oops on the driveways though).

  4. Ibises are rare here in central Ohio- but I saw one a few years ago. Happy New Year, Wildlifewatcher!

    • Hi Seasons, Happy New Year to you as well! I am amazed that you had an ibis way up there in Ohio but gee, they do get around. Smart useful birds. Hope you are enjoying the beautiful country-side but are not terribly cold. We cooled down into the upper 40s during the day which I am coping with but not enjoying. I am a former California gal who enjoys Florida’s Sun. Have a great coming week!
