Little Blue Heron
Herons, egrets, alligators and more were spotted in Lake Apopka along The North Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. The drive is an absolutely wonderful bird watching spot here in Central Florida! We visited it on Sept. 1, 2018 in the afternoon.
The North Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is about eleven miles long on a one-way narrow dirt road that is sometimes on the top of a levy. The wildlife is abundant! I can only imagine what variety of birds will be there later on in the Winter months when so many birds migrate here to Florida.
I took over 100 photographs on the slow drive around the marsh. This drive is free of charge and is fairly close to Orlando and The Villages. It is near Apopka, FL. I highly recommend visiting if you are in the area. I will be sharing more photographs from my visit for this week’s blog posts. Larry The Alligator is a huge old American Alligator that apparently has lived in this pond for most if not all of its life. Larry The Alligator lives in The Villages, Florida in his pond near the Paddock Square in the Brownsville area of The Villages. The pond is a few blocks from the commercial area and is about a block from parking lots. The pond area is fairly large and has a fence with the sign seen below. I took the pictures a few days ago.
As you also can see from one of the photographs, the alligator caused a traffic jam of golf carts! A major event was winding down on the square which is one of the reasons why there also were a lot of folks on the cart path there. Juvenile Alligator, Early March 2016
The area where this Walmart shopping center is located on CR 466 is generally called the “Buffalo Ridge” area near The Villages, FL. It is across the highway from the charter schools. There are two small ponds at the right side of the shopping area and I often visit these bodies of water to spot a variety of wildlife. By the way, the juvenile Alligator is now about four feet long! Alligators grow quickly and especially so when there is a lot of food in their environment.
I often see Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, a Little Blue Heron, Anhingas, Coots, Moorhens, and various ducks in the two ponds. This also is where I saw that big flock of Cattle Egrets a few weeks ago. The larger of the two ponds is directly at the side of the Walmart parking lot. That larger pond often has more going on as far as bird life. Always fun to see which big birds are around! By the way, I love love love, the pizza at NYPD Pizza, which is at the shoreline of the smaller of the two ponds! No, they have not given me any consideration for this unofficial review! The La Chua Trail birds are fabulous! I so enjoyed seeing Great Egrets, Great Blue and Tri-colored Herons, Common Cormorants, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Anhingas; White Ibises, Snowy Egrets, Common Gallinules, and of course, the other animals – alligators and turtles.
I did not see any of the Wild Horses or Bison which once in awhile can be seen from this trail. I photographed these birds, gator, and trail scenes on March 12, 2015 at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, near Gainesville, Fl. Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger photo. Enjoy!
