Palm Warbler

Little Blue Heron

Anhinga

These two small ponds are on CR-466 in The Villages next to and near the Walmart’s parking lot.  I took these pictures on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019.  That ‘Gator looks to be about 9’ long by the way.  I took the photographs from the opposite shore of this pond! I have taken pictures at this location several times in the last few years.

In addition to the Alligator, there were two Little Blue Herons, a Try-colored Heron, a Great Egret, a Pied-billed Grebe, and two Anhingas.  Pretty amazing to see all that wildlife so close to commercial enterprises and parking lots!

Juvenile Little Blue Heron

The juvenile Little Blue Heron is all white until nearly an adult.  Once and adult, the bird has purple-blue feathers, a grey-blue bill, and yellow-green legs and feet.  These are called herons but are actually members of the egret family of wading birds.

Juvenile Little Blue Herons closely resemble the Snowy Egret, but the difference is in the color of the bill and a lack of yellow just above the bill.  Snowy Egrets have a black bill.  Snowy Egrets also have mustard yellow-colored feet.  I took these photos here in The Villages, FL.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the photo.  Enjoy!

Wading Birds at Freedom Pointe Lake in The Villages, FL

Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and Tri-Colored Heron

Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Wood Storks, Anhingas, and a Tri-Color Heron were spotted this past week at the Freedom Pointe Lake in The Villages, FL.  This little lake borders a golf course, an assisted living complex, and a boulevard with golf cart multi-modal pathway.  It is often busy with wading birds during the Fall through Spring months.  I enjoy visiting this area as it is easy to see the birds from the path or the parking area.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!

Eufala National Wildlife Refuge Part 2 of 2

Great Egret

I was in Eufala, Alabama last week and visited the Lakepointe Resort State Park Campground and Eufala National Wildlife Refuge.  Here are some more photographs I took during this visit.  I loved spotting Kildeer, a lone male Northern Cardinal, a pair of Gadwall ducks, a flock of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, a Northern Mockingbird, and several Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons.  It was a fun visit!  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the photo.  Enjoy!

Cattle Egrets!

A flock of Cattle Egrets were spotted on the grassy banks of the ponds at the Souliere Villas in The Villages, Florida a few days ago.  This area has recently been developed and there are still several open fields there.  The area is also pretty close to small horse farms, too.  Cattle Egrets are usually found near horse or cattle pastures as they dine on insects attracted by the livestock.

These are medium-sized white-colored egrets that have a distinctive mustard yellow streak on their back near the neck and head.  They also have a yellow bill.  This flock was lounging and roosting among the scrubby low trees on the edge of the two man-made water retention ponds.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!

Wading Bird Wednesday

Snowy Egret

This Snowy Egret was hanging out near the shore of little Lake Mira-mar at Spanish Springs in The Villages, Florida.  After a few minutes it flew over to another area of the lake where it was joined by an adult White Ibis.

The Trip-colored Heron was spotted at the Freedom Pointe Lake while the Great Blue Heron was seen at a water retention pond area at the Nancy Lopez Legacy Golf Course near the driving range pond there.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!
