Sweet Songbirds

Male Northern Cardinal

Male Northern Cardinal

Northern Cardinals, House Finches, a Carolina Chickadee, a few Mourning Doves and a Tufted Titmouse were all spotted here on my street in the last few days in addition to the small flock of Downy Woodpeckers.  I took all of these pictures last week.  The birds are enjoying several nice bird feeders as well as the abundant insects in the shrubbery and Oaks.

We have been having nearly daily rain also so there is plenty of water, as well as food for the birds.  Pretty soon, we will also be seeing many more migrating birds.  I can’t wait!  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger picture.  Enjoy!

Woodpeckers on Wednesday

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Red-bellied Woodpecker

A pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers and a hen Downy Woodpecker, were spotted in my huge old Live Oaks a few days ago on a cloudy morning.  The Red-bellied Woodpeckers are a young pair that is in the process of building their first home.  There has been a lot of pecking and drilling going on.

It has been raining here off and on for the last four days.  I have noticed that woodpeckers are active in damp weather as the moist bark is easier to chip away for building a home and for uncovering any insects or grubs in the tree bark.  I love woodpeckers and am quite happy to have two or three here!  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the photo.  Enjoy!

It’s Another Woodpecker Wednesday!

DSC_7589

This cute Downey Woodpecker, a hen, was spotted recently pecking on the metal and plastic yard lamp in a neighbor’s front yard. Unfortunately and innocently, woodpeckers love pecking on hollow man-made objects as they enjoy the booming loud noise their drumming produces.  This bird circled the globe of the lamp.

This little gal is new to the neighborhood and is likely a migratory bird from up North.  It is no secret that I adore woodpeckers of all types; so, welcome little cutie to the neighborhood.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!
