This month is the sixth anniversary of this blog! How time flies  I started out talking about the critters I saw daily while we lived along the shoreline of a beautiful lake in a residential resort near Crossville, in Cumberland County, Tennessee.   Next, we lived a year at a little six acre place also in the Crossville, TN area.

Finally, we decided to make the move South to warmer Florida were we lived in Marion County near Ocala, and now live in Lake County, Florida.

A big thank you to all of you who read the blog! I appreciate you!   Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger version.  These are some older snapshots I know you will enjoy revisiting.  Enjoy!

Here are some of the ducks I have spotted in the last several weeks in Marion County, Florida.  I saw all except the Florida Mottled Ducks at Tuscawilla Park in Ocala.  The small group of Mottled Ducks was spotted at one of the golf course rainfall retention ponds here in the development where I live.  The Musvovies and the Pekins are domestic (farm) ducks but the others are all wild ducks.   Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger photo.  Enjoy!

The Beauty of Eagles

DSC_0146

Bald Eagles are so majestic!  I have spotted five Southern Bald Eagles in the last week here in Northern Florida.  I spotted one Bald Eagle in its nest on the top of an electric tower near Paynes Prairie State Preserve on Highway 441 on February 6, 2015; a pair of Bald Eagles at the Guana River Wildlife Management Area off of the coastal highway A-1A, near St. Augustine, Florida, and another pair of Bald Eagles at Tuscawilla Park in Ocala, Florida on February 11, 2015.

It is thrilling to see these wonderful birds of prey!  The Southern Bald Eagles are numerous here in Florida.  The Bald Eagles eat fish, rodents, small birds, and sometimes small animals.  They love to eat Coots, which are a rail bird that looks like a duck.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!  Have a happy Valentine’s Day tomorrow!

A male Eastern Bluebird, a female Yellow-bellied Sap Sucker, a male Baltimore Oriole, and a male Northern Cardinal, were all spotted in the last two weeks here.

The Baltimore Oriole is a Winter visitor and was seen at Tuscawilla Park in Ocala, FL.  I also saw the Northern Cardinal at that same park.  The Bluebird and woodpecker were spotted here in the housing development where I live.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers at Tuscawilla Park

DSC_9229 - Version 2

Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers were among the many migratory birds I saw at Tuscawilla Park in Ocala, FL, on January 20, 2015, and January 23, 2015.  One of the hen Wood Ducks was unusually light colored, a “Leucastic” coloring.

There were just a handful of each of the Wood Ducks and the Hooded Mergansers among the throng of Black Bellied Whistling Ducks and a few domestic Muscovy and Pekin Ducks that are year around park ducks.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

Tuscawilla Park’s Whistlers

DSC_8997

I spotted these Black Bellied Whistling Ducks at the Tuscawilla Park near downtown Ocala, FL, on three recent days.   These ducks are so very cute with pinkish bills and pink feet.  They have brown and tan bodies with a small amount of black and white.  I was quite thrilled to have seen them.  The Whistlers are migratory Winter visitors.

The Whistlers are dabbling ducks and eat a variety of grains, aquatic plants, insects, worms, and occasional tiny aquatic animals.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!
