An Osprey (Sea Hawk or Sea Eagle)

I photographed this Osprey at Lake Paradise in The Villages, FL, from the lovely little Schwartz Park. I took the photographs on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 late in the afternoon.  The bird of prey was trying unsuccessfully to catch a tasty fish for its meal.  The lake is very high right now since we have had a lot of rain recently.  I have been seeing many Canada Geese, the resident Great Blue Heron, a few ducks, a few egrets and Anhingas but this is the first Osprey here in several weeks that I have photographed.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!

The Osprey Gets The Fish!

I spotted this Osprey and tracked it while it swooped and dove into Cherry Lake (Lake Sumter) in The Villages, Florida.  I was at the lovely little Live Oak Park wooden observation deck over the shoreline.  The bird of prey got its fish – probably a perch.  This lake is a medium-sized lake and is near the Lake Sumter Landing business and entertainment area here.  Some of the lake is residential, but a lot of it is wild marshland on the shore.  It is much more full of water than we had seen in previous weeks, thanks to a couple of heavy recent storms.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the photo.  Enjoy!

Occasionally I will spot an Osprey or two around the small neighborhood park lake here.  The lake recently had a tremendous number of ducks, egrets, ibises, herons, cormorants, anhingas, coots and geese around.  These certainly will attract the attention of birds of prey such as the Osprey!

Osprey are usually brown and white but can also be white, grey and black.  They are medium to large hawks that live around areas where there is a bit of water such as lakes, rivers, and oceans.

Osprey hunt by swooping onto their prey (often fish), and clutching it with their long, sharp, and curved, talons.  Osprey can carry fish and other prey quite a distance.  They are often seen in high places such as trees or the top of poles or on cliff edges, eating.  They build stick nests also up high, where they raise their young.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!
