Rodent Neighbors

I just am so lucky to live in an area just teeming with wildlife!  I see a lot of very cute rodents such as Grey Squirrels, Cotton-tail Rabbits, and Chipmunks several times a week if not daily.  We have about ten Cotton-tail Rabbits here on the street.  We have numerous Chipmunks and Grey Squirrels too!  Almost every house here has several Grey Squirrels in their trees.

The Grey Squirrels eat seeds, acorns, nuts, bark, and small fruits.  The Rabbits mostly eat grass, tender leaves, flowers, and occasionally, small fruits and vegetables.  The Chipmunks eat seeds, nuts, small fruits and occasionally, insects.  The Squirrels live in the trees, the Rabbits and the Chipmunks live in underground burrows.  Occasionally, Rabbits in the wild will live above ground under thick shrubbery and bushes.  Here are some pictures I have recently taken in my yard and along the street where I live.  Please click on the thumbnail version to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

Cheeky Chipmunks

The Chipmunks around my yards and in my neighborhood seem to be a lot more active in recent days.  I have installed a new bird feeder in both my front and back yards.  The resident Chipmunk loves to clean up fallen bird seed from around the bird feeder area on the ground.  The Chipmunks carry a lot of their food in special pouches within their cheeks.  That is why sometimes you’ll see a Chipmunk with huge stuffed puffed cheeks!  The Chipmunks are busy working on gathering seeds nuts and acorns to store for food to eat this coming winter.  The Chipmunks will also enjoy fresh small berries and fruits.  They occasionally will hunt for small insects, and eggs.  The Chipmunk is quite acrobatic and very very fast.  They do tend to tunnel in the ground.  They are generally solitary except when finding a mate.  Usually there are only one or two Chipmunks in an average home yard area.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger version.  Enjoy!
