Views of Wildlife Here on the Little Farm

I took these pictures here in my yard in the last two days.  I am always amazed at the big variety of different birds, ducks and small animals that come around.  I even had this mysterious kitty that is hopefully a neighbor’s wayward pet.    I also saw a Cotton-Tailed Rabbit on the street just in front of the driveway.

The Wood Ducks were lounging on the opposite shoreline near the dam.  The Eastern Chipmunk was sneaking up on the porch looking for bird seed treats.  I saw an American Robin sitting on a fence post.  There even was a Chipping Sparrow on the bird feeder and also a Tufted Titmouse.  The Red-Headed Woodpecker and the White-Breasted Nuthatch made themselves known, too!    I had a great time looking at all the wildlife!  Both of the days I took these pictures on had short, on and off rains.   Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

Kildeer

A few Kildeer have been around here lately.  They especially browse for insects in the grass near the gulch area and also across the pond in the large cattle pasture that belongs to the next-door neighbor’s farm.  Kildeer are shorebirds.  They have long legs and a medium-sized pointed slender bill.  They are brown on the back and white underneath.  They have bands of very dark brown, that is nearly black.

Kildeer nest on the ground  in undisturbed quiet areas when possible.  The bird tricks predators by playing as injured to draw the predator away from the nest area.  I got pretty close to one bird who seemed to just freeze in place when I walked near and stopped.  I was about fifteen feet away from the bird and was in plain sight.  I took most of the pictures yesterday, April 27, 2012 and also on April 19, 2012 in my yard.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

Run, Rabbit, Run!

Cotton-tail Rabbits have been coming out to explore the pastures and gulch areas of the little farm in recent days.  On April 15, 2012, I saw two of the swift bunnies running near the driveway and the gulch.  One had been escaping a loose Beagle dog that excitedly had chased the rabbit from the street.  The owner called the dog home as the rabbit made the dash up the driveway, to relative safety near where I was standing with the camera.

The other rabbit darted out from the gulch area and headed off across the shoreline to the lush pasture at the far end of the little farm.  I took these pictures in my yard on Sunday at about 5:00pm.   Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

A Cotton-Tailed Rabbit

This is the second time I have seen a Cotton-tailed bunny here on the little farm since November.  This rabbit was sitting quite still.  It had seen me and was trying not to be noticed.  I took its picture and went on my way down the driveway to do some birdwatching.  The first time I saw this rabbit was about two weeks ago.  It had run out from under the wooden shed that is near the pond.  That shed has a small space under it, which soon will have a lattice cover on it.  Rabbits live mostly under small rocky ledges, or in the ground in burrows.  They are not often seen in the Winter as they like to stay in their burrow homes in colder weather.

Rabbits eat leafy plants many vegetables, and grasses.  I will soon have to protect the newly planted vegetables and the new small fruit trees.  Rabbits also like to nibble on fruit tree bark.  Yikes!  They are quite cute so I vote for measures such as repellant and fencing.  I took the picture on March 21, 2012 at about 5:30pm in my yard.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!
