Different Herons

Great Blue Heron

Great Blue Herons, Little Blue Herons and Tri-color Herons are the most frequently seen herons here in The Villages, FL.  I am also including a shot of a Green Heron that I spotted in Fairfield Glade, Tennessee several years ago, and a Yellow-crowned Night Heron I saw in Belize this last December.  These large birds live around fresh water mostly and wade in the shallow water hunting for small fish, frogs, aquatic snails and larger insects.  Some of the herons are very colorful such as the Little Blue Heron.

I enjoy watching the birds stroll along the banks of the ponds or lakes and then seriously stare down their prey when on the hunt for their meal.  These birds use their sharp-pointed bill to stab catch their meal.  Herons usually roost in large trees were they build nests of sticks.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!

Wildlife in Belize

Juvenile Little Blue Heron

I have been to Mexico and Belize on a one week cruise last week.  I only took pictures while in Belize for a single day, and enjoyed a couple hours on the Belize River while en-route to the Mayan ruins at Altun-ha.  On the river we saw about 10 Little Blue Herons in different spots; a few black Howler Monkeys; several Iguanas (males are orange), two Crocodiles; a Yellow-crowned Night Heron and a few tropical song-birds.

It was really interesting to see all the exotic and familiar (Little Blue Herons) wildlife there.  I hope to return to Belize some day.  It is a lovely place with interesting friendly folks!  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the slightly larger version of the picture.  Enjoy!

Tricolored Herons, Little Blue Herons and a Yellow-crowned Night Heron were among the gorgeous large birds that I saw last week at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, Florida.

These herons like this protected shallow Mangrove salt water marsh and lagoon.  These herons eat shrimp, fish, and other smaller (largely aquatic) animals.  I took these pictures on Jan. 29, 2014.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!
