Graceful Geese

Canada Geese live both here on the little farm pond and on the nearby private community lake.  They often cruise between the two areas so I get to witness their graceful, if quite noisy, flight.  The Canada Geese are plant and seed-eating birds.  They love eating tender new grass.  The shorelines of the pond here are basically full of pasture grasses.  This is like a grocery store for the geese.  I really enjoy seeing the geese fly.

The leader is important to the flock.  The lead goose makes sure the flock stays on course.  The distance between the two bodies of water here is very close, so the geese sometimes don’t  fly in a strict “V” formation.  There still is a “pecking order” though.  The dominant goose leads and the next dominate is close behind.  The last goose also is a sort of look-out for the flock.  I am happy to have photographed the geese in flight.  I took these pictures on Jan. 29, 2012 and again on Feb. 2, 2012 in my yard.  Please click on the thumbnail image to see the larger picture.  Enjoy!

    • Hi TexWisGirl, Many thanks! I have a lot of fun watching all the wildfowl here. By the way, first visitors to the newly installed bird feeder appeared this morning – a House Finch and a Tufted Titmouse. No pictures. We were just pulling up in the car and scared the birds off. Have a lovely day today!

  2. You get the best in flight pictures!

    • Hi Ginny, Thanks so much! I point and track while shooting with the camera. Geese and Herons are a lot easier than those ducks are! : )
Have a wonderful day and a most pleasant evening tonight!

  3. I love the photo of the pair in flight along the edge of the pond!

  4. Great post and photos, Linda! I love the flight photos. It is always cool to see the geese in flight.
